Biography

The Honorable Judge Edward Patrick Moffat II

Edward Patrick Moffat II suddenly and unexpectedly passed away January 16, 2010 at the age of 63. Judge Moffat was born December 20, 1946 in Denver Colorado to Edward Patrick Moffat and Josephine Sansone-Moffat. The family moved to Oakland, California in 1963 where he graduated from Bishop O'Dowd High School. Ed carried on his education at St. Mary's College, Moraga, graduating with a B.A. in History in 1969. His innate sense of justice and fair play then led him to a career in law. In 1972 he earned his J.D. from Golden Gate University, where he distinguished himself as a member of the Law Review.

Not long after, Ed moved to Madera California to accept an assistant district attorney position. Over the next 12 years Ed gained broad experience in both criminal and appellate law with successive positions with the U.S. Attorney's Office, Federal Public Defender's Office, Tulare County Public Defender's Office, and in private practice.

In 1986, Ed made the bold decision to run for Madera Superior Court Judge. He won and served the people of Madera County and the State of California with honor and distinction, being reelected 4 times in his 24 years on the bench. Judge Moffat continued to serve until the day of his untimely death.

With an eye for possibility and humorous observation Ed shared his many talents enriching the lives of all those around him. If there was anything Ed was more devoted to than his family and work, it was community service. He was a highly active member of the Young Men's Institute, the Madera Noon Lions, the Italo American Club, and Italian Catholic Federation, Knights of Columbus, Pan American Club, and the Madera Elks Club. He also worked tirelessly with local youth and the Boy Scouts of America.

In 2001 Ed was awarded the Golden Apple Award from the Madera County Office of Education for his service as presiding judge at the Mock Trial Contest since 1986. In addition, Judge Moffat was also YMI Man of the Year, Pan American's Man of the Year and Dad's Can Cook 2003 Father of the Year.

In his private time Ed could be found golfing with his children and friends at the Madera Golf and Country Club; at home baking with his grandchildren or playing penny slot machines at any casino with his wife Veronica. He was a sports enthusiast who loved discussing Major League Baseball, his Denver Broncos and could be found reading the Sports section of the San Francisco Chronicle.

He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Veronica Ann Moffat, children Gina, Edward Patrick III, Sarah, and Matthew Moffat, his brothers John and Joe Moffat, his sister Marie Capri and his beloved grand children Kobe and Devon. He also leaves behind loving nieces and nephews John Moffat Jr., Stephanie Callahan, Lisa Floyd, Joe and Pat Moffat, Katherine, John and Brian Hall, Eugenio and Tashina Rameriz and grand nephew Tyler.

Ed Moffat was many things: loving husband and father, devoted brother, stalwart friend, consummate professional, tireless community leader, and a man of great faith. He is gone now, but his wisdom, generosity and compassion touched countless minds and hearts, and he lives on in them.

Go with all our love, Ed. Rest in peace.
